UK Export Finance

James Bowker has been in place as UK Export Finance’s (“UKEF”) Adviser in Kent since July 2014.

James’ role is to raise awareness of the many schemes the Government offers to help small and larger businesses overcome financial obstacles to selling goods and services abroad, whether for the first time or on a more experienced footing. He is keen to stress that the Export Finance Adviser role extends to providing free advice on help that is available by Banks and other private sector businesses.

The intention is that UKEF’s products and services complement the overall range of support available to Business. Examples of help include the provision of Government Guarantees to Banks so that the Bank can release valuable working capital funds that may have been “ring fenced” by the provision of a Bond, eg a Tender Bond if a Business is competing for a new contract.

Additionally a UKEF Guarantee can also provide Banks with a suitable level of security to enable the provision of additional working capital funds to a Business competing for a lucrative new contract. To protect against the risk of non payment by an Overseas customers UKEF also provides credit insurance products.

UK Export Finance was established after the first world war to help a beleaguered British Industry struggling to re-establish itself and provide support in securing new contracts abroad. For many decades (and many members may be more familiar with its more formal title) the Export Credits Guarantee Department was synonymous with helping Exporters of large projects and capital equipment - aeroplanes, ships etc.

However, whilst that role remains relevant, UKEF is now focused on helping all businesses in almost all sectors and all sizes, whether they are a small independent Engineering business finalizing their first overseas contract or a more experienced Exporter using UKEF as longer term partner. Even if there is not an Overseas contract imminent, James is happy to discuss what support UKEF can offer for business planning for the future.
